Who is Liliyana?

Profile

Liliyana Natsir is the most decorated mixed doubles player in Indonesian badminton history. Nicknamed "Butet", she dominated world mixed doubles for over a decade alongside Nova Widianto, then Tontowi Ahmad.

Achievements

Olympic champion at Rio 2016 with Tontowi Ahmad — Indonesia's only gold at the 2016 Games across all disciplines —, she captured four world titles (2005, 2007, 2013, 2017) and three All England Open titles (2012, 2013, 2014). Olympic silver medallist at Beijing 2008 with Nova Widianto.

Playing style

Liliyana Natsir is renowned for a net game of rare finesse and her ability to dictate tempo despite a modest stature. Her trajectory reading and surgical short lifts are part of the fundamentals taught in Indonesian training centres. Her partnership with Tontowi Ahmad, built on near-perfect front/back complementarity, is studied as the modern blueprint for high-level mixed doubles.

Legacy

After retiring from the international circuit in 2019 following the All England Open, Liliyana Natsir remains one of the most respected figures in Asian badminton. Her technical style, built on finesse and placement rather than power, has inspired a generation of Indonesian players.
