Who is Lee?
ProfileLee Chong Wei is widely regarded as one of the greatest men's singles players in badminton history. World No. 1 for a record 349 consecutive weeks, the left-handed Malaysian dominated the 2008-2018 decade with rare consistency at the top.
Career
A three-time Olympic silver medallist (Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016), Lee Chong Wei lost three finals — twice to Lin Dan, once to Chen Long — in rivalries that defined an era. He won the World Junior title in 2002, the World Tour Finals in 2008 and 2010, and collected 47 BWF circuit titles, including 12 Superseries / World Tour finals overall.
Playing style
His racket speed, explosive footwork and surgical drop shots set the modern men's singles standard. Especially feared in the backcourt — his forehand slice remains a reference — he combined net aggression with patient point construction. His ability to apply pressure from the short serve has shaped a generation of Asian players.
Legacy
Diagnosed with nose cancer mid-2018, Lee Chong Wei retired in 2019 without ever clinching Olympic gold — the only missing line in his career. Knighted "Datuk" then "Dato' Sri", he remains a Malaysian icon. His rivalry with Lin Dan, immortalised by their 40 head-to-heads, is widely considered the greatest in badminton history.
